How to Join

First… The Sports Fair

Where? Registration. Once you register, you will be signposted to the Sports Fair. Come and find our stand, cunningly marked “Canoe”.
When? Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th September (Freshers Week ‘07)
Why? Come and meet us! Whether you are a hardened river god or have never sat in a kayak before, we are a lovely, helpful bunch. If you have ANY questions about the club, don’t hesitate to ask one of us. Some of the people who will be on the stand had never paddled before last year, some are awesome coaches and some are ex-GB team members.. So no excuses!

Second… Pool Sessions

Where? Holt Park Leisure Centre.
When? First session - 24th September The session runs from 9PM to 10.30PM.
How do I get there? The Number 1 bus towards Holt Park. This bus runs along the Otley Road. For the first few sessions, there will be senior members at the Parkinson Steps (outside Uni) at 8.00PM and the bus stop opposite Somerfields in Headingley at 8.30PM, if you meet us at these places we will make sure you don’t get lost!Bodington Halls - Someone will be at the bus stop by the main building at 8.30PM to meet you.Devonshire Halls - Someone will meet you at the main archway at 8.30PM.
What is it? A great opportunity to practice skills. Many of our older members are qualified kayak coaches, and are able and willing to help you improve your kayaking, whether you are practicing advanced river skills or just getting in a kayak for the first time!
What do I need? a) To be able to swim 50 metres (two lengths of a small swimming pool). This is for safety reasons.
b) Your normal swimming costume. You are welcome to wear a t-shirt or rash-vest if you want.
c) Cash. The session costs £1. You will also need bus fare, and as we’re bound to end up in the pub after the session, you’ll probably need beer money too.

Lastly… Registration Fee

How much? The total cost is £28. This breaks down into £20 for the union fee, and £8 directly for the Canoe Club. Basically, the £20 goes into a big pot for all of the clubs in the union to share, whereas the £8 comes directly to our club. The union fee is a one-off cost, ie. once you pay it, you only have to pay individual club fees no matter how many clubs you join.
Where do I pay? In the ARC. This is on the top floor of the union. Go up the main stairs from the foyer, turn right, go through the double doors, follow the corridor round to the right, go up the second set of stairs and that is the ARC main desk in front of you!Monday, Wednesday and Friday lunchtimes (1-2PM) for the two weeks after the first pool session, someone will be at the canoe club noticeboard (up the main stairs in the union) to go through the form with you and take you up to the ARC, if you’re not sure where it is!
If you have any questions or want advice about anything, drop me an email (thecaptain at luucc.co.uk) or a text (07877 429131), or speak to any of the senior members of the club. They don’t bite, I promise! Luke, Captain
